The John McCall MacBain Graduate Scholarship is a scholarship for McGill graduates to undertake a degree at the master’s or doctoral level offered by Wadham College at the University of Oxford.

About the Scholarship

This scholarship was established by friends of John McCall MacBain in his honour to support talented McGill graduates of strong character with leadership potential to improve the lives of others.

The award is valued at up to GBP 50,000 per year for the regular duration of the graduate course taken full-time. The actual amount will be determined by the McCall MacBain Foundation each year and will be based on the cost of tuition and fees for the particular course of study and Wadham College’s fees, including fees for room and board in College accommodation.


Scholarship Details

Students will be selected on the basis of their character, community leadership, and academic excellence. Those in programs of more than one year will have their award renewed on the basis of the same.

The scholarship is to support students entering a master’s or doctoral level program at the University of Oxford.

Note that applicants must apply and be admitted to the University of Oxford in a graduate degree that is offered at Wadham College.

Scholarship recipients receive the following support (up to a maximum of GBP 50,000 per year):

  • Course fees covered in full
  • A monthly living stipend during the academic terms

Note that application to and acceptance at the University of Oxford are independent from application to the John McCall MacBain Graduate Scholarship.


Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have completed at least one degree at McGill by August of the year in which you apply for this scholarship
  • Apply and be admitted to a graduate course that is offered at Wadham College

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for this scholarship are:

  • Strong character, including integrity, hard work, empathy, and perserverance
  • A track record of community involvement and leadership
  • Academic excellence

Application Process and Timeline

January 2025

Students must apply to a graduate course offered by Wadham College at Oxford by Oxford’s January 2025 deadline. Read the application guide to the University of Oxford.

March 2025

Fill out an online application for the John McCall MacBain Graduate Scholarship at Wadham College. The application consists of a comprehensive application form, one-page resume, transcripts, and two references (one academic and one community).

Please note that references must register as users in the online application system, and submit their reference independently of the applicant (do NOT share your credentials with your reference). After submitting, references are asked to email a PDF copy of their submission to wadham@mccallmacbain.org.

April 14, 2025

Applications will close on this date at 4:00 p.m. EDT. Completed applications will include the completed online application, transcripts, a resume, two references, and confirmation of your admission to a graduate degree that is offered at Wadham College.

April 23, 2025

Those shortlisted for the scholarship will then be invited to an interview by the McCall MacBain Foundation.

May 5, 2025

Interviews will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EDT on this date.

Scholarship recipients will be notified of the outcomes shortly after the interviews.
