Applying to the Scholarship
Q: What documents are required for the application?
A: You will need to complete an online application form and submit your high school transcript. You must provide the names, relationships, and contact information of your references on the online application, but you do not need to submit reference letters. We will contact your references via phone or email if you are invited to attend interviews.
Q: Who should I choose for my school and community references?
A: You will be asked to list two references on the online application form: one who can speak about you in a community context and one who can speak about you in a school context. Choose individuals who know you well and can discuss your character, community or school involvement, and leadership experiences. Examples of community references include supervisors from volunteer work or employment and coaches from community athletic programs. Examples of school references include teachers and school administrators from your high school. Your references should not be relatives or classmates. Please note that you are only asked to list the contact information for your reference – you will not submit reference letters. Your references will only be contacted if you are invited to interview for the scholarship.
Q: Can I apply if I take a gap year after high school?
A: Yes, you can apply if you take a gap year after high school, as long as you do not begin a post-secondary program. However, to apply you must be nominated by your high school at the time of your application to be considered for the scholarship. It is your responsibility to communicate with your school about the nomination process even if you are not attending the school that year.
Application Process
Q: Do I have to attend the interview in person, or can I do a virtual interview instead?
A: Finalists are required to attend the interview in person to be considered for the scholarship. The interview date will be announced on our website at the time of application. Please save the date if you are applying for the scholarship.
Q: How will I be notified of the outcome of my application?
A: Applicants who are selected for interviews will receive an email invitation to attend. Applicants who are not selected for the interviews will receive an email notification. Applicants who attend the in-person interviews will receive a call informing them of the outcome of the interviews within a week.
About the Scholarship Program
Q: How many years of study does the scholarship cover?
A: For degree stream recipients, the scholarship is awarded for up to 4 years, regardless of program length. For diploma stream recipients, the scholarship duration matches the program length: up to 2 years for a 2-year program and up to 3 years for a 3-year program. For both streams, the scholarship must be renewed annually, subject to maintaining full-time student status, satisfactory academic performance, and leadership growth. Students in co-op programs received funding only for academic semesters (not while on co-op).
Q: Are there any obligations or commitments required from scholarship recipients?
A: Recipients must maintain full-time student status according to their home institution’s regulations, maintain a 3.0 average on a 4.0 scale (generally considered a B grade), and continue to grow their community engagement and leadership potential by making positive contributions to their campus and/or broader communities.
