Scholarships

We believe that scholarships can be a powerful tool for discovering and supporting future leaders. The scholarships we support – leadership-focused scholarships – are designed with this goal in mind. They look beyond academic records and traditional metrics of student success to focus on leadership potential.

They share three common elements:

An extensive and robust recruitment strategy

Many students do not apply for scholarships because they assume they will not win. They may think that scholarships require near-perfect grades or – for more holistic scholarships – a long list of traditional accolades. Some students may not know anyone who has won a scholarship and assume scholarships are for others, not them. The scholarship programs we support develop recruitment strategies that reach a diverse pool of talented applicants, including students who might not otherwise apply.

A holistic and contextual selection process

Access to opportunity differs enormously from one student to another. Metrics like academic record or a list of accolades and achievements often tells us more about how much access a young person has had to opportunity rather than their future leadership potential. The scholarships we support take a contextual approach: they look at what a young person has done with the opportunities afforded them to date. In their selections processes, these scholarships seek to understand a young person’s underlying values and motivations, their propensity to see and respond to needs in the communities they are part of, as well as evidence of qualities such as integrity, empathy, self-awareness, resilience, perseverance, curiosity, an entrepreneurial spirit, and hard work.

A comprehensive enrichment program

The scholarships we support include a financial award, which can be transformational in allowing a young person to focus on their growth trajectory. These scholarships also include elements such as mentorship, additional leadership curriculum and workshops, work experiences, and access to other leaders and networks. These elements equip scholarship recipients with the competencies and confidence they need to grow into their full potential and become purpose-driven leaders over the course of their lives.

What We Support:

  • We have made transformational gifts to some of the world’s leading scholarship programs: The Foundation has supported world-class leadership-focused scholarship programs to enable their expansion and continuity. These include transformational gifts to the Rhodes Scholarships (for students globally to study at the University of Oxford), Mandela Rhodes Scholarships (for African students to study in South Africa), and the Loran Scholarships (for Canadian students to study at universities across the country). These scholarships have a legacy of enabling purposeful leadership and have been path-setters in providing opportunities globally and regionally.
  • We collaborate with post-secondary institutions to launch new scholarship programs: We leverage our learnings and expertise from supporting global scholarship programs and running our own to build and grow new programs with post-secondary partners who share our goal of supporting leadership potential in their contexts.
  • We support a wide range of scholarship programs reaching diverse talent globally: With a view to making scholarships available to more young people, we support a significant number of scholarships in several countries around the world. Many of these programs are tailored towards populations that remain underrepresented in post-secondary education and among scholarship recipients broadly.
  • We facilitate the sharing of best practices among partners: We bring together the leaders of comprehensive, leadership-focused scholarship programs from around the world to exchange ideas and share best practices for nurturing and equipping the next generation of leaders.
