Loran Scholars Foundation

Founded in 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation grants the Loran Award—one of Canada’s largest undergraduate awards—to youth who demonstrate strength of character, a deep commitment to service, and exceptional leadership potential. Loran has identified, equipped, and empowered values-driven students for more than 35 years, developing a diverse ecosystem of Canadian leaders who will contribute to local, national, and international communities throughout their lives.

To date, Loran has provided more than $70 million in undergraduate awards to 3,400+ promising high school and Cegep students, including over 750 past and present Loran Scholars. The Loran Award consists of a four-year leadership-enrichment program, financial support for undergraduate studies in the form of a tuition waiver and living stipend, diverse opportunities for experiential learning, one-on-one mentorship from a business or community leader, scholar gatherings, a long-term community of peers and alumni, and supporters from coast to coast to coast.

Our partnership contributes to:

  • Supporting an increased number of Loran Scholars: We have supported the Loran Scholars Foundation since 2014 and have underwritten over 70 McCall MacBain Loran Scholars so far. Currently, we support eight new Loran Awards annually. As a Foundation, we recognize that the depth of leadership potential in Canada exceeds the number of Loran Awards available. We want to recognize students who distinguish themselves at the provincial, territorial, and national levels. We fund over 20 one-time provincial and finalist awards annually.
  • Engaging alumni to invest in the future of Loran: More than 70% of Loran alumni donate to the Loran Scholars Foundation to benefit future generations of scholars. To encourage the growth of Loran’s alumni giving, we established a 10-year alumni match program, matching alumni giving dollar-for-dollar to build the organization’s endowment.
  • Teachers Building Leaders Awards: We believe teachers have a profound impact on shaping future leaders and scholars. To recognize the exceptional role they play — inside and beyond classrooms—in inspiring, encouraging, and nurturing the potential of their students, we seeded the Teachers Building Leaders Awards. Graduating Loran Scholars are given the opportunity to nominate a teacher at their primary or secondary institution to express their gratitude. Over the last 10 years, more than 150 Loran Scholars have recognized approximately 250 teachers across Canada with the award.
