The Rhodes Trust

The Rhodes Scholarships enables exceptional post-graduate students to study at the University of Oxford on the basis of great academic achievement, character, leadership and commitment to service. Scholars are provided with support to develop these qualities, including through retreats, workshops, and conferences. As Second Century Founder of the Rhodes Scholarships, John and Marcy McCall MacBain and the Foundation have underwritten 100 Rhodes Scholars since the transformative gift announced in 2013, which allows the Rhodes Trust to fund the scholarships in perpetuity. The Second Century gift also catalyzed the significant expansion of the scholarships’ numbers and geographic reach — from 83 scholarships awarded to students from any of 14 countries each year, to more than 100 awarded to students from any of 67 countries each year. The Foundation underwrites scholars from Canada, Australia, Germany, India, Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa, the United States and Zambia. John McCall MacBain is a Rhodes Scholar (1980, Quebec) and attended Wadham College.
