Recipients of 2022 McCall Huron County Scholarships Selected

Huron County, Ontario (September 14, 2022) – Eight Huron County students have received scholarships valued at up to $44,000 over four years to pursue their undergraduate studies beginning this fall. This is the fourth class of recipients of the McCall Huron County Scholarships, founded by Marcy and John McCall MacBain in 2018.

This year’s recipients are: Spencer Baird (F.E. Madill Secondary School), Emily Bieman (F.E. Madill Secondary School), Carlene Craig (South Huron District High School), Sarah Durnin (Goderich District Collegiate Institute), Caitlin McKercher (Central Huron Secondary School), Maria Pot (St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School), Latisha Van Beets (Central Huron Secondary School), and Makenna Wormington (Goderich District Collegiate Institute).  In addition, nine students were chosen for a finalist award of $2,500 to go towards their post-secondary studies. Selected applicants participated in extensive interviews which looked beyond academic achievement to examine activities and pursuits in the service of others and across a broad spectrum of leadership roles. Once again, the Baker family directly supported one scholarship, and one finalist award recipient.

Historically reserved for university-bound students, this year, the McCall Huron County Scholarships expanded the scholarship to students pursuing diploma programs as well. Two additional scholarships were available compared to 2021 and were provided to Makenna Wormington, who will study journalism, and Carlene Craig, who will study respiratory therapy. Like their peers attending university, Makenna and Carlene embody the values of strong character, community involvement, and leadership potential that these scholarships seek to foster. The McCall Huron County Scholarships are thrilled to support more students in Huron County, and in 2023 will offer a total of up to nine scholarships, including up to three scholarships for students pursuing diploma programs.

“On behalf of the McCall MacBain Foundation, I am so excited to announce the fourth class of scholars for McCall Huron County Scholarships,” said Dr. Marcy McCall MacBain. “Having grown up in Walton, Ontario, these scholarships are a way to support stand-out academic talent and student leaders from my hometown region. We hope this program encourages scholars to take meaningful risks and, more than anything, that it enables them to continue helping others in their community.”

Applications for the 2023 McCall Huron County Scholarships will open September 19th. Students in both degree and diploma streams apply through the same online application portal. Visit our page to learn more and apply.
