It has been an incredible 2.5 months since I embarked on this journey to Oaxaca, Mexico. The opportunity to live and learn in this beautiful part of the world, with the generous support of MMIF, has truly been a dream come true.
This journey has given me the confidence that I can learn anything if I dedicate myself to it, even in a short period. In Oaxaca, there’s always a reason to celebrate. The locals seize every opportunity to dance, have a good time, and celebrate the joy of life. Two of my favourite celebrations so far have been Mexican Independence Day and Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). The streets come alive with colourful decorations, and the city buzzes with energy. And of course, no celebration in Oaxaca is complete without delicious local food, which always fills my stomach and my heart.
One of the most interesting aspects of life in Oaxaca is the locals’ laid-back and spontaneous lifestyle. There are no bus schedules for the city bus service, and many shops operate without fixed opening hours. Most of the information regarding events happening in the city is passed on through word of mouth, posters scattered in coffee shops, and various online groups. Oaxaca is also a hub for social resistance, with numerous advocacy groups and community initiatives focused on feminism, migrant rights, and animal rights.
As a social work student, this experience has given me a unique opportunity to gain insight into macro-level social issues. Volunteering at a grassroots collective kitchen for migrants in Oaxaca has allowed me to witness first-hand the effects of international policies on personal levels. My time here has also allowed me to explore my personal interests in creative arts. Oaxaca is a city with many talented artists, and I’ve had the privilege of attending workshops at the textile museum and experimenting with different dyeing techniques using marigold flowers and indigo. I’ve also been fortunate to take classes with local illustration and ceramic artists, advancing my techniques and finding my artistic expression.
My experience in Oaxaca has been nothing short of extraordinary. I have learned more about myself in the past 2.5 months than in the past 4-5 years. I look forward to the adventures and discoveries that Mexico holds for me in the future months!
