The McCall MacBain Foundation Mourns the Loss of its Founding Chair Donald J. Johnston (1936-2022)

February 7, 2022 – The Honourable Donald J. Johnston, P.C., O.C., Q.C. served as McCall MacBain Foundation’s Chair since its inception in 2007 until 2017. An established leader within and beyond the borders of Canada, he grew up on a farm in the Ottawa area and attended a one-room schoolhouse in his youth.  The gold medalist in his class at McGill Law School, he was a brilliant lawyer in Montreal, Member of Parliament from Westmount (Montreal), Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Donald was Secretary General of the OECD in Paris for 10 years, where he became a valued advisor to many governments around the world.  He was also a gifted musician, talented tennis player, prolific author and devoted family man.  “We deeply mourn the loss of our founding Chair, Chair Emeritus and dear family friend,” said John and Marcy McCall MacBain. “Donald combined a keen knowledge of economics and world affairs with a deeply-rooted sense of fairness, justice and equality.  He was ahead of his time in understanding the urgency around climate change. We will miss his sage counsel.  We hope to continue to build upon his ideas and his selfless concern for the welfare not only of Canadians but of people across the globe.”
