The Global Methane Hub is a large-scale philanthropic effort to coordinate and accelerate action on reducing methane emissions – the quickest way to slow down warming and deter climate change impacts in the short term.
Established in 2021 by a group of funders, including the McCall MacBain Foundation, the Hub convenes a global network of scientists, experts, policymakers, and philanthropists towards the collective goal of reducing methane from energy, agriculture, and waste by 45% and warming by 0.3 °C by 2040 (relative to 2020).
The Hub was launched to complement the global momentum on methane and support country efforts to meet their commitments under the Global Methane Pledge, a voluntary commitment to reduce methane emissions signed by more than 150 countries. Since its founding, the Hub has catalyzed over USD 500 million in funding to more than 100 grantees across 152 countries.
The Hub’s key work includes:
Build Capacity. Strengthen the Field: The Hub supports organizations across the globe with resources and expertise to advance solutions that would reduce emissions in agriculture, waste and energy, while protecting and benefiting local communities. At the national and international levels, it works to increase buy-in for methane action and aid policymakers with knowledge and best practices to develop regulations, targets, and strategies to reduce emissions.
Engagement: The Hub facilitates convenings between organizations, funders, scientists, experts, policymakers, and civil society to ensure collaborative action and sharing of new learnings and best practices. It also continuously advocates for methane action on national and global levels, including at COP, where over the last few years, it has elevated methane reduction to a global priority, ensuring it remains central to negotiations and national commitments.
Measurement & Research: Previously hard to measure, new technologies are making methane emissions more visible and quantifiable, creating resources for governments to acknowledge and curb emissions. The Hub funds emerging technologies and the latest scientific advancements to enhance data collection, transparency, and sharing, enabling governments, policymakers, and industry leaders to pinpoint the exact sources of emissions and track their efforts to reduce them.
