    Liberia Maternal Mortality rate of 994/100,000 is one of the highest in the world. The local NGO LPMM is part of the Regional Prevention of Maternal Mortality (RPMM, headquarters in Accra, Ghana), an organization engaged in activities aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal deaths in West Africa.  Since 1999, LPMM has been working in Monrovia and its suburbs to strengthen maternal services delivery, collect maternal data, mobilize and sensitize on the prevention of maternal and neonatal deaths.

    With the financial support of MMF, LPMM is extending its methodology and approach to other parts of the country, starting with Bong County.
    The goal of this grant is to contribute to the reduction maternal and neonatal mortality in Bong county and supporting the work and efforts of local NGOs.

    Coordinating and keeping track of external aid is often a significant challenge for governments and ministries. MMF funded the External Aid Coordination Unit (EACU) within the MoHSW to enable the MoHSW to better lead and coordinate donor aid in the health sector. The ultimate goal of this project is to improve the efficiency of health service provision in Liberia. The EACU is composed by a team of 5 staff and is integrated with the Department for Planning, Research and Development within the Ministry of Health.

    Maternal mortality and child morbidity are critical issues in Liberia. Médecins du Monde has been concentrating their efforts in supporting the Liberian government in the provision of high-quality health services in urban and rural areas of the Bong County since 2003.  The goal of this program is to reduce mother and child morbidity and mortality in Bong County, more specifically by preventing the transmission of HIV from Mother to Child (PMTCT+), Malaria and effects of malnutrition, improving midwifery training and providing services to manage complications during labor.

    The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is an organization that provides funding to governments to fight three of the world’s most devastating diseases. MMF funded the team within the MoHSW who wrote and submitted Liberia’s TB proposal to the Global Fund. The application was approved and as a result, the MoHSW received a grant of USD 14.5 million over 5 years from the Global Fund to support TB programs.
