2013 Inhaled Oxytocin Project for maternal health

The McCall MacBain Foundation has granted AUD $500,000 to the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in support of reseach on inhaled oxytocin in the field of maternal health. Additionally the MMF has pledged a match of AUD $1 million to the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, as a further incentive for donations towards this important research.

Oxytocin is an essential medicine recommended by the World Health Organisation for all women immediately after childbirth to prevent excessive bleeding. However, effective usage of the current injection product is limited in developing countries due to the requirement for refrigeration, skilled healthcare workers and the supplies and facilities necessary for safe administration. The Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University (Australia) are developing an affordable, and simple-to-use inhaled oxytocin powder, with the aim of making the drug more available and easily utilized in developing countries.
